A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Gloria earned a B.A. degree in 1971 from Spelman College (Atlanta, Georgia) in English and Secondary Education after which she attended the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan) and received the A.M.L.S. degree in Library Science. She completed her formal education at the Florida State University where she received her Ph.D. in Library and Information Studies. Her professional career has spanned the educational arena including teaching high school English, serving as a Library Media Specialist, and working at the district level as Director of Library Media Services in both Duval and Leon County School Systems. Before assuming her current position as Administrator of Bethel Christian Academy, she worked in higher education as Assistant Dean and Associate Professor in the College of Education at the Florida A. & M. University.
A highly respected Florida educator, her leadership has been exhibited from both the educational and spiritual perspectives, resulting in her touching hundreds of lives in different ways over the years. Dr. Holmes has served on many statewide and national committees in various roles, and was elected to the national office of Vice President of Kappa Delta Pi, An International Honor Society in Education. While in that position, she was selected to present a paper at the China-United States Conference on Education in Beijing, China in 1997. She has been actively involved in numerous civic and professional organizations, willingly serving in many consulting and leadership roles including chairing committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for Accreditation of various schools in the State of Florida.

A profound speaker and workshop presenter, she has also traveled nationally and internationally to Africa, Russia, and Germany, and countries in the Caribbean to actively
participate in a variety of mission, goodwill, and educational endeavors. Her humanitarian efforts extend locally, where she has contributed to uplifting the community by volunteering for the “Tallahassee MDA lock-up” to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, working in the United Way campaign, serving on the Advisory Board for the Leon County Public Library System, and on the Governor’s Mansion Committee.

Her civic involvement includes membership in the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a public service sorority; the National Council of Negro Women, and Phi Delta Kappa. She is also the founder of the Tallahassee Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College. In 2005 she received the “Women Change America Award” from the Tallahassee Community College.
She is happily married to the Reverend Dr. R.B. Holmes, Jr. who serves as pastor of the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Florida and she is the mother of two children. A committed “servant-leader,” Gloria untiringly supports her husband in his visionary endeavors and also teaches a Married Couples Sunday School class. As chair of the Women’s Ministry at her church, she has led the successful planning and implementation of many women conferences, as well as provided leadership in supporting and collaborating with other organizations such as Mothers in Crisis and Angel Tree (a ministry of Prison Fellowship). On at least three occasions, she has led a delegation of women from her church to Pignon, Haiti to conduct a women’s conference emphasizing evangelism, prayer, mission, education, and medical care, especially teaching breast self-examinations. Annually, she conducts a workshop on “Steps for Developing A Holistic Women’s Ministry” at the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. Along with her husband, she has authored “How to Maintain Momentum in Marriage and Ministry,” and they are contributors in a book entitled “Marriage Matters: It’s God’s Will.” Gloria enjoys attending cultural events, reading, traveling and meeting individuals from diverse backgrounds. She considers it a blessed privilege to “serve this present age her calling to fulfill.”
